American artist, Jedd Novatt, is a sculptor of international renown. Novatt plays with gravity and weight, balancing piling open-space squares and overlapping unequal edges in the process. Monumental sculptures of his pave both international indoor and outdoor sites, all of which correspond naturally with the respective space.
Novatt taps on the raw qualities of materials, such as steel and bronze, allowing him to magnify their individual notions of purity, power, permanence or stoicism. Instability and irregularity, which are characteristic features of his work, give rhythm to the passive cubic matrixes, in turn allowing the structures to be liberated from geometry as they are deconstructed, dislocated and emptied. In addition to the freedom suggested by the structures of his sculptures, the complexity of them, which defies both physics and human apprehension, sets new hypothesis in the history of abstract sculptures, placing doubt in the centre of his artistic quest.
Born in New York City in 1958, Novatt graduated from Sarah Lawrence College in Bronxville, New York and Lacoste School of the Arts, now part of Savannah College of Art and Design, in France.
